WMC to Changes Plan to Host Two 2020 Marches

WMC+Jan21.2017.jpg

Women’s March Chicago planned to host two Marches in 2020 - and then there was a pandemic. Covid brought inequities into sharp focus and made it abundantly clear that we face one of the most consequential elections of our lifetimes. We VOTE, quite literally, for the life of our democracy.

WIth the safety of our marchers and our city a primary consideration, we shifted our plans for a socially distanced and masked event across Chicagoland neighborhoods to a virtual Zoom to the Polls on October 17. Together we will create a space for motivation and activation - sharing in photos and videos how we gather in COVID-safe ways to register, vote early (some sites open in Chicago on October 14), drop off vote by mail ballots, and fire up voters across Chicagoland.

On Saturday, January 18, 2020 WMC marched to mark the annual anniversary of the Women’s March movement. More than 40,000 people braved the cold and took to the streets. These intrepid individuals of all ages, races and genders were led led by our marchers with disabilities and our high-level women elected officials — including Mayor Lori Lightfoot, Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, and others.

More than 50 partner organizations participated in our Gallery of Issues experience, where they engaged marchers around five critical issues: 2020 Census; gun violence prevention; climate justice; health care access; and voting.

In 2020, we will see some of the most critical elections in recent history. WMC wants the voices of our expansive and diverse Chicagoland community to be heard loud and clear.
